This weekend is one of the most popular holidays in America: Memorial Day. This is a time for celebrating our freedom by enjoying the pleasures of family & friends in company. We host these celebrations beneath the proud flag of our nation. The frolicking of children, the smoke from the grill, the iced cool beverages in a sunny park or back yard, the laughter and joy of a day to celebrate simply being happy to 'be'...these are the fruits of the labor and sacrifice of men and women in far off places; ensuring our freedoms & the freedoms of others who suffer on the planet.
Many of the defenders of this nation are away from us - off doing what only they can. It is important that we not forget them. They are not here to share in the rewards of their efforts yet they press on. They loose men and women; friends and comrades while out there and they need our empathy - not pity but rather, an acknowledgment that we "get it" and that what they are sacrificing is not going unnoticed.
Today, while you and yours celebrate this good nation and your freedoms; bare a flag, take time to send a letter or a care package to the troops, stop by a memorial and pay your respects, go by a memorial hospital and tell a wounded soldier, thanks. Do something to show that we are not just self-centered opportunists.
I personally found a great site (Minimus) for customizing care packages to send to the troops anywhere. I checked it out with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). It's amazing how much you can do for the troops with just a few dollars. Please go and check it out.
